Getting Started with Metis M.2 Max
The Metis M.2 Max is the higher-performance Metis M.2 card — up to 214 TOPS, in 2 GB or 8 GB LPDDR4X configurations. It uses both DRAM interfaces of the Metis AIPU to double the memory bandwidth of the original Metis M.2.
System compatibility
The Metis M.2 Max is a standard M.2 2280 M-key module (PCIe Gen 3.0, 4-lane). It is not compatible with B-keyed or SATA-based M.2 slots. Your host must provide:
- An M.2 2280 M-key slot with up to 11.55 W average power (23.1 W peak), per PCI-SIG M.2 specification revision 4.0.
- Operation within the -20 °C to 70 °C ambient temperature range.
The fan-cooled Metis M.2 Max is 15 mm tall (to the top of the heatsink) and 25 mm wide — taller and wider than a bare M.2 module. Make sure your host has enough clearance above and around the M.2 slot for the heatsink and fan, and that no nearby components or covers obstruct them. Confirm against the mechanical drawings in the Metis M.2 Max datasheet for your build.
Install the module
Wear an anti-static wrist strap, work on an anti-static mat, and avoid touching the connector pins. Improper handling or installation may damage the card or void the warranty.
- Power down your system and disconnect it from the power source.
- Locate an available M.2 2280 M-key slot, and confirm there is enough clearance for the heatsink (see above).
- Align the Metis M.2 Max with the slot and gently insert it at a 20-30 degree angle.
- Push the card down until it is seated, and secure it with the bracket screw or M.2 standoff screw.
- Ensure the fan and heatsink are unobstructed and the chassis has adequate airflow.
Confirm power availability
Check that your M.2 slot can supply the required power:
sudo lspci -vvv | grep -i "LnkSta" -A 10
Look for "MaxPower" in the output to verify the slot can supply 11.55 W (average) / 23.1 W (peak). If it cannot, check your motherboard specifications or use an alternative carrier board.
Install the Voyager SDK
The Voyager SDK enables inference with Metis (drivers, evaluation tools, and APIs). Clone the Voyager SDK GitHub repository and run the install script, following the install guide. Then try the first inference walkthrough.
Post-installation checklist
- The M.2 Max card is fully seated and secured with a screw.
- The heatsink and fan are unobstructed, and chassis airflow is adequate.
- The system detects the card (
lspci | grep Axelera). - The Voyager SDK is installed and ready for inference.
